Hair Metrics Analysis: Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy
One of the newer treatments to promote hair growth and regrow hair, Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) has been growing in popularity both to supplement hair transplants as well as to be used as a stand-alone procedure. Although this treatment is new to hair loss, it has actually been used in the treatment of injuries and other areas of medicine for many years. In this approach, platelets and growth factor proteins are extracted from a patient’s blood and injected into the scalp.
The theory is that these platelet rich plasma (PRP) promote increased blood flow, hair growth, and healing. The concentration of the plasma needs to be at least 5x to be effective, and often more. The cost for a single treatment is around $400 but varies depending on the practitioner, plasma concentration, and range of supplementary treatments offered.
This treatment has shown some promise, but like many others, it is short lived and requires continual maintenance. Practitioners recommend about 3 visits per year (all charged as separate visits) to maintain any gains made, if any. Additionally, injections must be made in targeted areas near stem cells in order to be most effective, and these injections require local anesthetic.
That being said, this may be appropriate to explore with a qualified physician if you’re intent on a treatment that regrows your own hair. At about $100 or less per month, the treatment is far below the cost of hair transplants, and unlike hair transplants, if you don’t like the results, you can stop. You will likely know if it works for you within the first 6 to 12 months.
